Why Evangelicals Hate Jesus

This post comes straight from my core. It's a passionate cry to millions who call themselves Christians, but who seem to live their lives in reverse of the words and example of Jesus.

For this reason, please allow me to express what I feel in English. I'm hoping my many Spanish-speaking readers can follow along.

A sticker seen on the backs of cars in the USA summarizes much of what I wish to express, with great sadness:

JESUS, PLEASE PROTECT US FROM YOUR FOLLOWERS

It's a telling jab at the Evangelical (and not so moral) majority in my country. That one sentence puts in stark contrast Jesus' message of unconditional love with the close-minded and cold-hearted "Churchianity" that is marketed non-stop in the United States.

This indictment fills me with great sadness. For now is the time, in the midst of economic and moral crisis, for people to finally discover the TRUE JESUS as never before. Yet the obstacles that prevent millions from knowing Jesus Christ are myriad and often created by those very ones who claim to know Him.

But let me tell you a secret. (Come closer, I'm going to whisper it to you...)

Now, as then, a seeker is not likely to find Him at church, nor snoring through a long-winded Mass. It's not impossible, but often improbable.

He will be most easily found where His evangelio, His truly Good News, will be most welcomed. His love manifests itself "out there": on the streets, with the single mother, in the cancer ward, calling after the pushers and the pimps. Because they understand forgiveness. And the need for a new life. Oh yes: sometimes His message pursues and captures a few lost yuppies and professionals like myself.

It is to these He comes. THEY WILL FIND THE JOY. They will find the peace. The Kingdom of Heaven, surprising many, in the destiny-fraught days to come, might just be revealed more quickly to a lesbian couple seeking God, that to a legalistic bishop or priest.

As my friend John Crowder puts it, Jesus' message and sacrifice is so real and freeing that His followers should be the epitome of joyous celebration. In John's words:

CHRISTIANITY IS NOT A FAST. IT'S A FESTIVAL!

To meet the laughing Host of the Eternal Party, you'll need to steer clear of a lot of religious folk. Seek His smile, expect His touch in the lives of those of His followers who move in grace, and live in love.

It may hurt some to read words such as those of Phil Zuckerman in the Huffington Post: "Why Evangelicals Hate Jesus". Yet it's of vital importance to do so. Because the Jesus they sell you on Sundays and on TV is a frayed, flannel-board faux Saviour, homogenised for the drive-thru, sofa-centered life of many Americans. In Zuckerman's words:

"Evangelicals don't exactly hate Jesus ... They do love him dearly. But not because of what he tried to teach humanity. Rather, Evangelicals love Jesus for what he does for them. (emphasis mine).

Through his magical grace, and by shedding his precious blood, Jesus saves Evangelicals from everlasting torture in hell, and guarantees them a premium, luxury villa in heaven. For this, and this only, they love him. They can't stop thanking him. And yet, as for Jesus himself -- his core values of peace, his core teachings of social justice, his core commandments of goodwill -- most Evangelicals seem to have nothing but disdain."

If you're seeking Him don't give up, despite the confusion and cold-heartedness you may have experienced in "Religion". He has clearly promised to be "the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him". Keep seeking, keep knocking, keep asking...

For, as the saying goes, to know Him is to love Him.

What is this movie about?
Furious Love, quite simply, is about one man’s journey into the heart of darkness to try and find out if God’s love can really overcome anything. It is one thing to know in your head that God loves you, but I wanted to try to make a film that moved that knowledge from the head to the heart. So we traveled all over the world and met a wide variety of ministries and people working in these dark places, and we saw God move in ways that simply needs to be seen to be believed.

When you say “darkness”, what do you mean?
Well, the easiest way to answer this question is to simply tell you what kinds of things are in the film. We filmed former satanists, prostitutes, the persecuted church, heroin addicts, people involved in witchcraft, new age, demon possessed, etc... If I was going to put God’s love to the test, I wanted to put up a good fight.

Of course, He completely obliterated the darkness we encountered every time, as you will see...

Quizás sea consequencia de caminar más - y de manera más consciente - mano en mano con el Amor Mismo, cuyo gracia y amor ágape me sigue transformando y sanando.

No es que esto haga más cómodo ni liviano el proceso de morir a si mismo; al contrario. Al entrar cada vez más hacia dentro, en unión con Aquel que es la Luz del Mundo, más manchas veo, más carencias, más falta de amor mío.

Amor, mi Gran Amor, cuánto Te necesito: enséñame a amar.

Una rosa para Conchi

Ayer operaron a Conchi la mamá de Miriam: amiga mía y, a la vez,
la esposa de nuestro querido Joe, contertulio aquí en el blog.

No hay que decir que se hicieron varias y muchas llamadas al Teléfono Rojo ayer para Conchi: para que tuviese mucha paz, para que los médicos tuviesen sabiduría, que Miriam y Joe se sintiesen fortalecidos... y que, sobre todo, sintiesen Su Presencia tierna en medio de esta prueba.

Conchi, estamos contigo, ya lo sabes - no temas nada.

La herencia del SIDA

Como muchos sabemos, la enfermedad del SIDA no sólo ha sido un auténtico catástrofe dentro de la comunidad gay, sino que ha robado a millones de niños africanos de sus padres.

Me refiero a los llamados huérfanos del SIDA.

Este tema siempre me ha conmovido mucho, pero a la vez siempre me había sentido tan impotente. No sabía ni qué ONGs se dedicaban al tema, ni en cuáles de ellos pudiera confiar. Ahora sí.

Resulta que Félix y Sara, dos amigos míos, están trabajando en un proyecto en Etiopía que se centra en la escolarización de niños huérfanos del SIDA. Os comparto un trozo de su e-mail de hoy, por si os interesa uniros a nosotros en apoyarles. Dado que les conozco personalmente y gozan de mi confianza absoluta, sé que avalarán este proyecto:

Etiopía ha perdido toda una generación y el país está lleno de abuelos y nietos, los padres fallecieron a causa del SIDA.

Estos huérfanos de la enfermedad no pueden ser escolarizados porque sus abuelos no pueden pagar los 15 euros necesarios para su escolarización. Con esos 15 euros se paga el uniforme y los libros, cosas ambas sin las cuales no pueden asistir a la escuela.

Queremos pedirte 15 euros para escolarizar a un niño etíope. Cuando vayamos nosotros mismos nos aseguraremos que el dinero es empleado en ese cometido.

Todavía estáis a tiempo aquellos que no habéis podido hacerlo.

Mi madre me mandó el siguiente poema el otro día.
Además de ser bastante divertido, lleva un mensaje
muy profundo dentro:

No juzguemos. AMEMOS.

Así es como Dios nos trata, con un Amor incondicional que nunca para de perseguirnos, desear lo mejor para nosotros, perdonarnos y colmarnos de bendiciones grandes y pequeños.

Y todo eso, a pesar del hecho de que muchos,
francamente, pasamos grandemente de Él.

La Religión es un opio porque se centra siempre en lo que se ve,
en las cosas externas. En el "show". ("Mira lo bueno que soy yo, y lo pervertido/perdido que 'son ellos'.")

Pero no juzguemos, si no queremos que seamos juzgados.
Como decía mi Maestro a los religiosos autocomplacientes de Su tiempo:

"Les aseguro que la gente de mala fama,
como los cobradores de impuestos y las prostitutas,
entrará al reino de Dios antes que ustedes.

Porque Juan el Bautista vino y les enseñó cómo hacer lo bueno y obedecer a Dios, pero ustedes no le creyeron.

En cambio, los cobradores y las prostitutas sí le creyeron. Y ustedes, aunque vieron eso, no cambiaron de idea, sino que siguieron sin creer en Él."

"La Pola" y la Gran Carrera de la Vida

¡Hola de nuevo, amig@s!

Acabo de volver de León, tras pasar unos días inolvidables con mis amigos Rosa, Atxa, Cris, "Abaloon" (Javi) y mas de 50 alumnos universitarios. Como todos los años, nos reunimos en un pequeño pueblo llamado "La Pola de Gordón" para respirar profundamente el aire de la montaña y abrir la mente.

Nos reunimos allí para reflexionar sobre temas como él de este año, "El Lujo" y nuestra sociedad materialista, un enfoque que ha logrado convertir "La Pola '08" en mucho más que una mera conferencia universitaria.

Ha sido un espacio de debate, de introspección... y de un espíritu libre y abierto que nos invitó a compartir temas importantes que normalmente no se expresan. Ha sido una gozada hablar con los jóvenes de "La Pola" y salí de allí también muy 'tocado' por haber podido compartir con ellos algunas de las cosas que considero las más importantes de la vida:

... el valor de las personas... la importancia de liberarnos de sistemas y dogmas controladoras... y la necesidad de conseguir una nueva vida mediante la búsqueda de un Dios vivo y verdadero... en vez de desesperarnos por las contradicciones, hipocresías y la hueca religión de un dios fotocopiado y borroso, carente de vida, amor y color.

Y mira lo curioso que es la Vida: voy un par de días después al cine, para disfrutar de "Speed Racer" (la última entrega de los creadores de "Matrix") y dentro de la trama de esa película supuestamente frívola, me asombra de nuevo el Gran Comunicador.

Porque muchos de los temas que comentamos acerca de la Gran Carrera de la Vida se hallan dentro de esa misma peli. Con una fuerte dosis de adrenalina añadida, ¡claro está! O sea que Él nos habla hoy en día por todos los canales posibles (si es que queremos abrir los oídos para escucharle... ;-)
